In this 5-part online course we will explore the role of the thoracic spine in the locomotion and functionality of the equine, taking into consideration both the ridden and unridden horse.
The thoracic spine of the horse is particularly important as it serves as a bridge between the forehand and the hindquarter. It is also the part of the horse we sit on for riding. It plays a vital role in the forward propulsion of the animal.
Each thoracic vertebra anchors a set of ribs (17-18 in number) and forms a point of attachment for the heavy muscles that support the head, neck and shoulders.
Course topics will include:
– relationships between the thoracic spine and other structures
– common equine complaints
– conditions of lordosis and kyphosis (swayback and hunter’s bump, for example)
– pinpointing where to work
– using bodywork to address saddle and tack fit concerns
– observation of the spine with actual bones
Course will include homegrown as well as anatomy videos, handout, charts and photos. Students will be encouraged to submit photos and videos of horses they are working with. This is an intro-to-intermediate course.
NCBTMB approved provider. 16 CEs available with completion of this course.
This course is not a substitute for veterinary care. Early Bird Deadline March 20th.
